Screen adjust
Hi, the new interface is really nice!, but now I see everything "too big", and seems I´m "wasting" the size of my screen, with big letters and numbers, etc.

It would be great for this new interface to be able to set the best size of the screen view, for each user.

I hope you can add this function.

Thanks
Rafael

Major waste of space, agreed, and also all our forms are now badly out of alignment. Taking the time to redo them all is not feasible.
Wes Davis 10/8/2014 12:14:41 PM
Size is way to big with no option to change it. Change us back to the original platform. This is has interfered with our daily workflow and is causing delay.
Kirill Bondar  Staff  10/8/2014 1:39:41 PM
@all: what is your screen's size? We are using TeamDesk internally - and with new UI long before the release - and to our opinion increasing font size and element paddings improved data readability on all devices and usability on touch-enabled.

@pamela: could you please send us an URL to a broken form(s) along with screen size to support@teamdesk.net ?
Rafael Muñiz 10/8/2014 1:53:40 PM
Kirill, If you are not planning to reduce the view, then I rather prefer to go back assap to the previus interface. Is this possible?
Wes Davis 10/8/2014 2:02:04 PM
We have to scroll to much to view any of our data. Please allow us to reduce the size or give us back the previous platfrom
Kirill Bondar  Staff  10/8/2014 2:47:55 PM
@all: at the moment we are receiving mostly positive feedback. We do value your opinion as well but we'll need some time to understand what we have to change to make both sides happy. What we are definitely not going to do is to maintain both old and new version as it will decrease our forward movement speed in half. So we have to find a balance that'll fit to all - perhaps decreasing some paddings and fonts slightly for all or under certain conditions like "on desktops with screen width under 1280px". We'll keep gathering feedback for a few days more.
ca@showtimegolf.com 10/8/2014 2:50:46 PM
if you can find the happy medium between the old size and the new size that may fix things. I like the new layout, it is just to large with to much scrolling, how do i locate my screen size to give you feedback??
Kirill Bondar  Staff  10/8/2014 2:50:53 PM
By the way, all browsers support page zooming via either menu or with Ctrl+Mouse Wheel; zooming out to 80-90% may serve as a temporary workaround.
Kirill Bondar  Staff  10/8/2014 2:54:03 PM
On Windows screen size can be found via right-clicking the desktop an selecting Screen Resolution or Properties from context menu. On Mac it is somewhere under System Preferences/Display
Wes Davis 10/8/2014 5:02:36 PM
its a little frustrating that this was implemented without any input from customers in advance. Seems like this is only useful to tablet and mobile device users and anyone with a desktop computer just has to deal with it.
Kirill Bondar  Staff  10/8/2014 6:53:22 PM
@wes: in fact TeamDesk new UI preview is an idea preceded by blog post is were we started from. Also touch devices play more and more significant role in our life, but unfortunately browsers do not provide a proper way to detect what kind of device we are dealing with. Mouse input is precise and does not require such a large buttons and inputs. Touch input is less precise and needs larger hit targets. However we can't tell for sure what kind of device we are dealing with - it can be a desktop computer with mouse, a touch-friendly laptop with mouse or the same laptop with mouse plugged off and used as a tablet, or it can be a tablet with bluetooth mouse connected, or just a touch-only tablet or smartphone. Touch users should definitely benefit from new design, mouse users are, say, 60/40. For some of them it's really a waste of screen estate, some of them are used to a latest web design "touch-friendly" trends.

I'm quite surprised at the anger. I find the look and feel much smoother. All of my customers have said how much better it looks and say that it's quicker to navigate through.

Would it not be possible though, to have a preferences area whereby Dashboard font and size, column font and size and tab font and size could be managed? These fields could be linked to the background CSS control(?)
basenine 10/9/2014 2:13:41 AM
I'd be surprised if the majority wanted to go back to the old version
basenine 10/9/2014 2:16:33 AM
I'd check browser zoom levels and browser preferences to make sure fonts sizes are set properly.
Rafael Muñiz 10/9/2014 5:32:14 AM
I´m working with my browser (Chrome) set to 90%.
With this set I found font size are ok, but still the rows are too high.
In my opinion font size and row high are not proportional.
On the other hand, the new Interface is much nicer than the previous, it just needs an adjustment, if possible.
pamela baker 10/9/2014 7:44:05 AM
I beg your pardon, Forms are fine, it's Views that are an issue. Much too much scrolling. We have several employees who work in smaller laptops so it was always an issue, and now it's much worse.

I'm sure it will work great on a tablet. Unfortunately, none of our employees are on touch devices.

Scroll resizing the browser is not an option because we use several other websites that will then display badly.

Gmail did something similar to their web interface, but they also offer different view densities, which is ideal. See https://support.google.com/mail/answer/1670219?hl=en for details. I cannot recommend this strongly enough.

Additionally, although the light text on dark background for nav certainly has a nice look, it is decidedly more difficult to read.
Kirill Bondar  Staff  10/9/2014 7:53:08 AM
@basenine: since we began from switching to new UI on per-app basis we gathered first feedback via support desk. There were some bug reports but no negative opinions about the font size.

@Pamela: good idea!

In old UI we had 11px font with 14px line height (LH - the distance between text top in two adjacent lines) and paddings around elements were quite randomly assigned. With new UI we have 12px font with 16px LH and paddings were reviewed to let elements have a height of a multiple of LH optionally with a half of LH added - 16px, 24px, 32px, 48px and so on. This approach allows to create vertical rhyme on the page - no matter what text you'll have in the sidebar and main part or in two adjacent columns in a form the lines of the text will be likely evenly aligned. Also, while you can specify paddings around elements as a percent of font size we've chosen pixels to fine tune elements height - you can, say, specify 4px padding around one element and 3px padding and 1px border around another to let them have equal height. Unfortunately, with this approach just reducing the base font size won't make the page compact - paddings should be adjusted too.

Perhaps view density is a right way to go, but there are many places for paddings to adjust and we won't set a goal to make "dense" design ideal - we'll reduce font size and make tables and forms presentation more compact leaving other bits intact and let you switch between compact and "normal" design.

I have recently encountered a new issue. When I convert a page to a PDF it no longer recognizes the check mark in our columns, it simply replaces the check with a square box. Can this be fixed?
Rafael Muñiz 10/9/2014 11:54:48 AM
Hi, in the previous IO, during the load of a form, I used to click "enter" in order to save the Record. Now I must press the "save" buttom. Not a big problem, but makes me leave the keyboard, to take the mouse and return to the keyboard, again...may be I need to configurate something. Do I?
Slava Shinderov  Staff  10/9/2014 12:24:07 PM
@Wes, @Rafael please open a separate question using this support portal if the new problem is not related to the discussed idea.
basenine 10/9/2014 5:09:32 PM
@kirill
Still no negative from myself or my customers. We love it and wouldn't want to go back. Views scrolling has always been a bug bare - nothing different to any other program though.
@pamela
I'm just trying to help 😀- I've worked with and seen other people work with tools that needed adjustment...not knowing that they could be adjusted or how to adjust them. Sometimes it's the simple solution that fixes the problem.
@rafael
If the minimum font size is set to, say, 22 in your browser preferences, then simply zooming the screen display can counteract with that. Adjusting the minimum font size might be the solution.
basenine 10/9/2014 5:46:56 PM
@all...
Minimum Font size in your browser adjusts Tabs fonts and column/field data. This might (might) help with size of views...which I know can end up on that wall over there to your right! 😉

Dashboard headings remain fixed.

FYI
Marc Andre Lacas 10/10/2014 4:35:39 AM
I was with Quickbase prior to TeamDesk and they had the same issue. I also have issues with it. As I am now converting an existing database from another source, the fields are too big to do proper data entry. I can manage to create views to accomodate for the new font size, but for data entry, I need a large table with the smallest possible fields as to see as much information as possible.
Kirill Bondar  Staff  10/10/2014 7:20:10 AM
Ok, by the popular demand high density option is here.

Please visit Setup > Labs and enable Adjust Font Size. Save. Then scroll down to the footer; to the right you'll have font size switcher.
basenine 10/10/2014 8:43:27 AM
I've had a try of the font size adjuster...I only notice a small difference.

I had a client phone today saying that one view was behaving differently on three different computers. 1 computer displays ok, 1 is medium-->bad the 3rd is bad.

I'm guessing it will be a Minimum font size allowance in the Preferences/options of the browser. Either that, or they have altered the font style or they have unchecked an option that "displays as the webmaster intended", therefore over riding the desired font setting(s)...or they have different zoom settings. They're all using Chrome so I'll report back to you on Monday.
Kirill Bondar  Staff  10/10/2014 10:01:05 AM
@Rafael: the standard browser behavior is to submit a form when focus is on the input field (except for multiline) and enter key is pressed; we are not trying to interfere it in any way. Could you please provide more details on this misbehavior as I am unable to reproduce it.
Kirill Bondar  Staff  10/10/2014 10:05:27 AM
@basenine: if you mess with browser styles you are on your own :)
pamela baker 10/10/2014 10:38:38 AM
The font size adjuster made a minor difference, but the issue is the padding, which has not changed. We cannot remove necessary columns on views, the columns need an option to be tighter.
Rafael Muñiz 10/10/2014 11:36:48 AM
Very good Kirill!!; I like the "high density option" (we use wide screens). Thanks!
Wes Davis 10/10/2014 11:45:56 AM
How do you get to the high density option? I dont see it
Kirill Bondar  Staff  10/10/2014 11:53:29 AM
@wes:
Please visit Setup > Labs and enable Adjust Font Size. Save. Then scroll down to the footer; to the right you'll have font size switcher.
basenine 10/10/2014 5:00:50 PM
@Kirill - ha ha 😃 ... I can pretty much guarantee that this will be the reason why 3 computers (all the same with the same screen size and same browser) are displaying the same view differently. It could even be right back to display settings at the OS level. If not, then I'm stuck!
basenine 10/12/2014 7:53:04 PM
As it turns out, nothing to do with minimum font sizes or browser settings.
Will put in support request.

The issue is basically related to Column Display Widths

Being able to set the column width in an InLine Edit view, would solve the problem and enhance the look of the view. When a Multi lined Text field is displayed in edit mode now (in line edit), the field is only 2 characters wide. To see what has been entered requires scrolling but it's still basically unreadable. The re-size function only makes the field vertically longer.
Marc Andre Lacas 10/13/2014 4:57:01 AM
New "high density" option works for me, thanks!
Rick Cogley 10/14/2014 12:04:51 AM
I enabled this for my team, and some who use smaller screens, like older laptops at client sites, like the new small size option better.

One thing we did notice: when on iPhone, the button to tap to switch to small fonts is too small to tap easily.
Robert Gustavsson 10/15/2014 4:24:51 PM
I appreciate how stuff is laid out vertically on narrow screens (mobile) with the new UI. I too have turned on the switch for small fonts.
basenine 10/15/2014 4:36:17 PM
Agreed with above. Looks better on smaller screen but is difficult activate.
Arnold Hakobyan 10/16/2014 12:57:57 AM
For me, only views' categories are too big on the screen. And the application name on the top. They are much bigger than the rest.
Kirill Bondar  Staff  10/17/2014 7:37:48 AM
Font switcher is slightly increased
Kirill Bondar  Staff  10/23/2014 7:08:30 AM
We have decreased the font and spacing around the headers
Rafael Muñiz 10/23/2014 3:52:55 PM
Hi Kirill,
What I tryied to explain (see my post 10/9/2014 11:54:48 AM) is that I used to press enter on my keyboard, when filling a form (multiline) and this action used to save that line.
Now, with the new Interface, when I press enter on my keyboard, nothing happens, and in order to save the line I need to press the save button with my mouse.
Thanks
Arnold Hakobyan 10/24/2014 8:35:32 AM
Thank you Kirill.
Daniel Vazquez Ger 10/26/2014 8:40:17 PM
Rafael Muñiz is right, pressing enter on the keyboard does not apply anything and it should save the record without needing to click on the save buttom.
Kirill Bondar  Staff  10/27/2014 5:35:24 AM
@Rafael, @Daniel: either we are looking on a wrong page or we are unable to reproduce it. Could you please send us an URL to the form along with field name to press Enter on and the browser model privately at support@teamdesk.net?
Kirill Bondar  Staff  10/30/2014 3:12:09 PM
@Rafael: ah, inline, not Multiline... Fixed!
Rafael Muñiz 10/30/2014 7:09:35 PM
Thanks a lot Kirill, the new interface is really nice and I enjoy everyday using it. Again thanks!
