Grid Edit
Another variant of mass edit idea is to allow table views to be switched to grid edit mode.

Let's look at Invoicing application as an example




For table views you would be able to specify if grid edit is allowed and what columns are editable.

Clicking on Grid Edit button puts the view in editable mode - perhaps on another screen.




After the editing is done, after clicking Save button all records are saved under single transaction: e.g. if one of the record contains some errors nothing is saved until the problem is corrected.

There are some weak points with this approach, however.

Since the significant amount of data is in memory and some data is in the database, dynamic on-screen recalculations won't work correctly - one example is the scenario where calculations include summary from the same table. Since behaviors and match conditions are also based on this mechanism they won't work too. Of course all values will be properly calculated after the record is saved, but do not expect immediate value changes the way it is done in forms.

This restrictions practically lead to limiting Grid Edit mode to editable columns only.

Another problem is merging the conflicts when multiple records are edited simultaneuosly. This won't likely work at all.

Yet another, user experience related problem we expect is the number of records in the view. Grid Edit will probably work fine for a limited number of records, but for the view displaying hundreds the user will be likely lost in numerous text boxes and dropdowns.

Even with limits, this would be very useful for us. One use case I can think of is, if you have a list of major project activities, and you need to quickly mark a color status, like RED, YELLOW or GREEN, or, to enter a quick status on each.

This is critical because we have 250 orders today and we need to mark them all up. So currently in Quickbase, we mark them to send to the warehouse and right click to copy down. I guess the work around would be spreadsheets but that lends itself to even more errors.

One idea is to all certain fields for gridedit and make sure no rules apply to them.

Really need this one.

That's a good idea for simple updates, but very often we have complex edits for all sorts of tables. We really use it every hour of every day on Quickbase

What if Blake needs to edit fields with different data in each record? For the above Invoicing example, putting in Quantity would most likely differ from record to record. Even with "Allow user to edit column(s)", you would need to select the records that had the same quantity....and then do it again for the other records.

The only limitation I see with Grid edit is the...: "Another problem is merging the conflicts when multiple records are edited simultaneuosly. This won't likely work at all."

Even with that limitation (I'd request to disable the verification function if that's what's necessary), I believe it will be a super useful tool in TD.

Hi All

I have read all the postings related to this, and find Grid edit is no longer or was never an option?

I note that IN LINE editing does work, but GRID EDIT will not be implemented?

8 years since the last post, I would like to reopen this thread.
There are similar online database platforms (e.g. Salesforce) that offer the option to edit multiple records on a Table View.
The way Salesforce do it is:
- you first select the records you wish to edit (with checkboxes on the left),
- then when you make a change on a column on one of the selected records it gives you the option to "Apply to all selected"
- you then see the changes on the screen for all the records, but you still need to click on SAVE to commit the changes.
It's a new feature in Salesforce that has increased its useability enormously. It would be great to have something similar in TeamDesk.
At the moment I am using a Multi-Record Button with a Workflow Action called "Edit many records" which I add to nearly every Table when I configure a new database. The button displays several input fields (those most likely to need to be updated/edited) which are then matched by Assignments in the Workflow Action.
It works great but it takes a bit of work to configure it for each Table.
