We think that if total or average is meaningful for particular column - it will be good to show it in any view displaying that column.

I'm afraid I don't quite agree with your second point above. Say I have field called PRICE. If I have a view of a shopping list, then showing the sum of all the prices is sensible. If on the other hand I have a view of the history of PRICE for a particular item, then showing the sum makes no sense at all. If anything it would make more sense to show the average. While I accept your point of not wanting to burden the system with to many options, I think being able to define whether I show totals, averages, max, min, etc at view level rather than at table level is a pretty basic requirement.
as a workaround for your particular case you can create "dummy" formula-numeric column returning actual "PRICE" and specify required total/average settings for it.
